Tatev Monastery stands on a rocky promontory above the Vorotan Gorge. A medieval university and fortress with views of the Syunik mountains, it is one of the most impressive places in Armenia.

The Wings of Tatev cable car leads to the monastery — one of the longest reversible cable cars in the world, running about 5.7 kilometres over the gorge.

Getting there
From Yerevan, about 280 km: 4–5 hours by car or on a tour to the cable car station in Halidzor. Tatev is in Syunik: the Russian Embassy advises tourists against the border districts of the province.

Garni is the only surviving Greco-Roman temple in Armenia, dating from the 1st century. Below it, in the gorge, is the Symphony of Stones: walls of hexagonal basalt columns.

Geghard Monastery is partly carved right into the rock: halls and chapels inside the mountain, a spring and remarkable acoustics. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Getting there
From Yerevan, about 40 minutes by car or minibus to Garni, and another 15 minutes to Geghard.

Sevan is one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world. Its water shifts from turquoise to deep blue, and in summer people swim and paddleboard here.

The 9th-century Sevanavank Monastery stands on a former island that has become a peninsula. Nearby is Dilijan, with forests known as “Armenian Switzerland”.

Getting there
From Yerevan, about an hour by car or minibus.

Before you go

Armenia: entry, safety, money, flights, laws and budget — with sources.

Entry

Russian citizens: visa-free, up to 180 days a year. With an international passport you can arrive by any transport; with the internal passport, only by air (according to the Foreign Ministry’s Consular Department). Stays of up to 30 days need no registration.

The land borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed: overland you can come only from Georgia and Iran, and Georgia does not accept the internal passport. A child leaving Armenia needs their own international passport and a birth certificate.

Rules for any passport

Checked 2 November 2026. These are the rules for a Russian citizen with an international passport on a tourist trip. For other passports and purposes, see the official website — the button above.

Safety

The Mir card is accepted only by VTB Armenia, at its ATMs and terminals. For everything else, cash: dollars and euros are easy to change into drams.

Budget

prices ×1.1 vs Russia · price level 0.41 (US = 1), 2025

Prices are slightly higher than in Russia. No mandatory tourist fees were found; from Yerevan to Tatev and Sevan you go by car or on a tour.

The price level is the ratio of purchasing power parity for household consumption to the market exchange rate (World Bank). These are national averages: resorts and capitals cost more, the countryside less. Flights are not included.
