Budget
What a trip costs
Flights, accommodation, food, transport and mandatory fees. Ticket prices change every day, so instead of made-up sums you get open data and a conversion from your own usual day.
The key measure is the price level: how many times more or less expensive life in a country is if you change money at the market rate. The World Bank calculates it for household consumption — food, housing, transport, services.
The conversion is simple: take what you spend on an ordinary day at home on food, housing and transport, and multiply it by the ratio of the price levels. The result is what the same day costs there.
This is a national average: resorts, capitals and islands cost more, the countryside less. Flights, visas, permits and park fees count separately — each country has its own.
The result is in the same currency as at home. World Bank data; a guide, not a price.

How not to overpay
The season decides
The shoulder season is when the weather is still good and prices are already lower: for many places, it is the months next to the highlighted ones.
Book early
For long-haul routes and in high season, tickets get pricier as the date gets closer. Flexible departure days save more than hunting for deals.
Official ticket offices
Buy park and UNESCO site tickets on the official websites: resellers charge more for the same tickets, and sometimes sell invalid ones.
Cash and exchange rates
Russian citizens need cash in most countries. Change money in town rather than at the airport, and not all at once.
Local transport
Trains and buses between cities often cost a third of what taxis and tours do — and show the country more honestly.
Insurance
Saving on it is the most expensive saving there is: a day in hospital abroad can cost as much as the whole holiday.
