For Russian citizens

Where you can go on a Russian passport

Visa-free, with an e-visa or with a regular visa — for every country in the atlas. Plus money and cards, flights, Russian Foreign Ministry warnings and documents.

This is reference information, not legal advice. Entry rules are set by the destination country, which can change them without notice; the final word belongs to the border officer. Before you go, open the official source linked on the country’s page.

Money and cards

Visa and Mastercard cards

Visa and Mastercard cards from Russian banks have not worked abroad since March 2022 — neither payments nor cash withdrawals (Visa, 5 March 2022; Bank of Russia, 6 March 2022).

Mir card

According to embassies and 2026 reviews, Mir works widely in Cuba; in Armenia only at VTB Armenia, in Vietnam only at VRB bank, and in Kazakhstan only for cash withdrawals at VTB Kazakhstan. We could not open the official NSPK list on 2 November 2026.

Cash

Taking foreign cash out of Russia is capped at the equivalent of $10,000 per person, children included; the ban has been in force since 2 March 2022, and declaring the money does not lift it. Cash above $10,000 (roubles and foreign currency together) has to be declared in writing.

Roubles to EAEU countries

From 29 September 2026, more than 1 million roubles in cash can be taken to the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Azerbaijan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan only through airports on the government’s list and with documents showing the cash withdrawal — otherwise anything above a million is confiscated.

UnionPay and QR

UnionPay cards from Russian banks are not accepted everywhere. In China, the Russian embassy recommends the Nihao China app: you link your card to it and pay with WeChat and Alipay QR codes. In Turkey, Kyrgyzstan and Thailand, QR payments work through Russian banks’ apps.

The Mir card works (fully or partly): Armenia, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Cuba.

Flights

Closed skies

Since 28 February 2022, the European Union has banned aircraft of Russian airlines from landing in, taking off from and flying over its territory (EU Regulation 2022/334). There are no direct flights to Europe or North America — you fly there with a connection.

Where to change planes

  • Istanbul
  • Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha
  • Baku, Yerevan, Tashkent, Belgrade
  • Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou

Direct flights

There are direct flights to the Caucasus and Central Asia, Turkey, the UAE, Egypt, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Bali and India. The list changes — check the airline’s schedule.

Middle East

In 2026, Rosaviatsia, the Russian air transport agency, temporarily restricted flights to Israel and Iran and through their airspace; routes to and across the region can change without notice.

Direct scheduled flights from Russia: Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkey, UAE, Egypt, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives, India, China, Mongolia, Tanzania.

Safety and Russian Foreign Ministry warnings

The Russian Foreign Ministry publishes advice to refrain from travel to certain countries. We never leave it out.

As of 2 November 2026, the Russian Foreign Ministry and Russian embassies advise against travel to the US, Germany, Poland, Moldova, Kosovo, Benin, Mali, Yemen, Israel and Saudi Arabia, and to certain areas of Thailand (the border with Cambodia), India (Jammu and Kashmir), DR Congo (the east) and Mexico (Jalisco). The advisory for the UAE and the Persian Gulf countries was lifted on 19 June 2026. For Cuba, an advisory from the Russian Economy Ministry is in force.

The Russian Foreign Ministry warns that Russian citizens risk detention in third countries at the request of the US — above all in EU and NATO countries; a list of higher-risk countries was published on the ministry’s website on 1 April 2026.

An advisory does not ban the trip, but it points to a real risk. Before you go, save the phone numbers of the Russian embassy and consulate in your destination.

Atlas countries with advisories and warnings in force: Armenia, Thailand, India, Montenegro, Italy, Madagascar, Mexico, Cuba, USA, Australia.

Documents and leaving Russia

International passport

  • Biometric: valid for 10 years; old-style: for 5.
  • Since 20 January 2026, children of any age can leave Russia only on their own international passport.
  • Germany, France, Poland, Finland, Iceland and a number of other countries do not recognise old-style passports.
  • Many countries require the passport to be valid for 6 more months after entry.

Insurance

  • Schengen visa: a policy with cover from €30,000 for the whole stay.
  • Georgia: compulsory since 1 January 2026.
  • Cuba: compulsory; without one, you buy a policy on arrival.
  • Tanzania and Zanzibar: local insurance for $44.

Who may not be allowed to leave

Leaving Russia can be restricted with debts from 30,000 roubles (from 10,000 roubles for alimony), after a military summons is entered in the register of summonses, with access to state secrets, in bankruptcy and in a number of other cases. Check your debts before the trip.

Return ticket and money

A border officer may ask for a return ticket, an accommodation booking and money for the trip. Keep them at hand — printed or on your phone, available offline.
