Issyk-Kul lies between ranges of the Tian Shan at about 1,600 metres. Its water is slightly salty and clear, and the lake does not freeze in winter.

The north shore has the resorts and beaches of Cholpon-Ata; the south shore has peace and quiet, the Jeti-Oguz gorge and Skazka (Fairy Tale) Canyon with its weathered red rocks.

Getting there
From Bishkek, 4–5 hours by car or minibus to Cholpon-Ata; in summer there are flights to Tamchy airport.

Lake Song-Kul

Access 3/5 · needs planningJFMAMJJASOND

Song-Kul lies at about 3,000 metres among summer pastures, the jailoo. In summer herders bring their livestock up here and put up yurts, and guests stay in yurt camps.

You ride horses, walk along the shore and watch the stars: the nearest town is far away, and there are no lights.

Getting there
From Bishkek, 6–7 hours by car via Kochkor; the last hours are on a mountain dirt road over a pass.
Why it’s hard
An altitude of about 3,000 metres, dirt-road passes and a short season: yurt camps open roughly from June to September, and nights are cold even in summer.

Ala Archa

The Ala Archa gorge means mountains right behind the city: spruce slopes, a fast river and glaciers. A day hike to the waterfall or to the Ak-Sai Glacier gives you a feel for the real Tian Shan.

Climbs of Korona Peak and other summits start here. Without training, it makes sense to keep to the trails in the valley.

Getting there
From Bishkek, about 40 minutes by taxi to the park entrance.
Fees and tickets
Entry to the park is a small fee.

Before you go

Kyrgyzstan: entry, safety, money, flights, laws and budget — with sources.

Entry

Russian citizens: visa-free, up to 90 days in every 180 days. You can enter with the internal passport (the Foreign Ministry’s Consular Department).

Since 20.01.2026, children under 14 can no longer leave Russia on a birth certificate. Foreigners, except citizens of exempt countries, register at their place of stay within 5 working days; whether Russian citizens are exempt — check on entry.

Rules for any passport

Checked 2 November 2026. These are the rules for a Russian citizen with an international passport on a tourist trip. For other passports and purposes, see the official website — the button above.

Safety

Money and cards

The Mir card has not worked since 2024 (according to reviews). QR-code payments through Russian banking apps do work; more reliable is cash — dollars, or roubles to exchange.

Flights

Direct Aeroflot flights from Sheremetyevo to Bishkek and Osh, and from other Russian cities — for example, from Irkutsk to Osh.

Laws and bans

  • Foreigners register at their place of stay within 5 working days, except citizens of exempt countries.
  • In the high mountains (Song-Kul, the passes) the weather changes within an hour: it is wise to register groups with the local authorities or at the camps.
  • Rules on medicines and drones were not found in official sources — check with the authorities.

Budget

prices about the same as in Russia · price level 0.34 (US = 1), 2025

Prices are slightly lower than in Russia. No mandatory tourist fees were found; entry to Ala Archa National Park costs a token sum.

The price level is the ratio of purchasing power parity for household consumption to the market exchange rate (World Bank). These are national averages: resorts and capitals cost more, the countryside less. Flights are not included.
