Stone Town in Zanzibar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: narrow streets, carved doors, markets and the history of the Swahili, the Arabs and the Portuguese.

The beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa in the north, tidal lagoons in the east, spice plantations and Jozani Forest with its red colobus monkeys.

Getting there
Direct and charter flights from Russia run seasonally; otherwise, connect in Doha, Dubai or Istanbul.
Fees and tickets
Zanzibar’s mandatory ZIC insurance costs about $44 (unofficial data); without a policy you may be refused entry.

Serengeti and Ngorongoro

Access 3/5 · needs planningJFMAMJJASOND

The Serengeti is endless savannah crossed by the Great Migration: more than a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras follow the rains. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a huge caldera where lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos and leopards live in a small area. A safari into the crater takes one day.

Getting there
Fly to Kilimanjaro or Arusha, then 6–8 hours by jeep, or a local flight to the airstrips in the park.
Fees and tickets
Serengeti: $70.80–82.60 per adult per 24 hours (secondary source); Ngorongoro: $70.80, and the descent into the crater $295 per vehicle.
Why it’s hard
Safaris are only in vehicles with a guide, park fees are paid for every 24 hours, and the drives within the park are long. The timing of the migration depends on the rains.

Kilimanjaro

Access 4/5 · hardJFMAMJJASOND

Kilimanjaro is a free-standing volcano, and its summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres), is the highest point in Africa. On the way up you pass through five climate zones, from rainforest to glaciers.

The climb takes 6–8 days on one of the routes — Marangu, Machame or Lemosho. The national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Getting there
Fly to Kilimanjaro airport, then about an hour to Moshi, the base for climbs.
Fees and tickets
Park fees are about $82.60 a day plus camping or hut fees and a rescue fee (secondary source); only with a licensed operator.
Why it’s hard
An altitude of almost 6,000 metres: altitude sickness is the main risk. You can climb only with a licensed guide and porters, and park fees are paid for every day.

Before you go

Tanzania: entry, safety, money, flights, laws and budget — with sources.

Entry

Russian citizens need a visa: an e-visa at eservices.immigration.go.tz or one on arrival. Single entry $50, multiple entry $100. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after departure; you may be refused entry without a return ticket and funds.

Since 01.10.2026, entry to the mainland requires the state NIC insurance — $44; for Zanzibar, ZIC insurance has been required since 01.10.2024. A yellow fever vaccination is recommended.

Rules for any passport

Checked 2 November 2026. These are the rules for a Russian citizen with an international passport on a tourist trip. For other passports and purposes, see the official website — the button above.

  • In the parks you may not feed or approach animals; littering is fined.
  • Do not photograph people without permission; on Zanzibar, wear clothes that cover you.

Budget

prices 1.5 times lower than in Russia · price level 0.25 (US = 1), 2024

Prices are almost a third lower than in Russia, but safaris and climbs are expensive: park fees are paid for every 24 hours. The Serengeti costs $70.80–82.60 per 24 hours, Kilimanjaro $82.60 a day plus guides.

The price level is the ratio of purchasing power parity for household consumption to the market exchange rate (World Bank). These are national averages: resorts and capitals cost more, the countryside less. Flights are not included.
