Old Havana and its fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Plaza Vieja and Cathedral Square, colonnades, balconies and music from open windows.

The Malecón seafront runs for kilometres along the ocean, and in the evening all of Havana comes out here. Rides around the city are offered in American cars from the 1950s.

The Viñales Valley is a land of red earth, tobacco plantations and limestone hills called mogotes. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a living cultural landscape.

You ride on horseback to tobacco farms where they show how cigars are rolled, and take a boat along the underground river in the Cueva del Indio.

Getting there
From Havana, about 3 hours by car or tourist bus.

Trinidad has barely changed since the 19th century: cobblestones, colourful houses with window grilles and the Plaza Mayor. Together with the Valley de los Ingenios and its sugar mills, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nearby are Playa Ancón on the Caribbean and the Escambray Mountains with their waterfalls.

Getting there
From Havana, about 4–5 hours by car or bus.

Safety

On 12.02.2026, because of the fuel crisis, the Russian Ministry of Economic Development advised refraining from tourist trips to Cuba “until the situation returns to normal”; the advice has not been withdrawn. According to the Spanish Foreign Ministry as of 16.10.2026, the island has long power and water cuts, and most hotels outside Havana are closed.

Money and cards

Cuba is one of the few countries where the Mir card works: at terminals in petrol stations, state shops, restaurants and hotels (the Russian Embassy, 21.10.2026). Exchanging money on the black market is a crime.

Flights

There are no direct flights at the moment: the programme was suspended in February 2026 because of the fuel shortage; Rosaviatsia is working on resuming it. Connections are via international hubs.

Budget

no World Bank data

There are no World Bank data for Cuba. Right now the main question is not price but fuel, electricity and hotels that are open.

The price level is the ratio of purchasing power parity for household consumption to the market exchange rate (World Bank). These are national averages: resorts and capitals cost more, the countryside less. Flights are not included.
